  • Notes

    ^I Name: Knowing a kitsune's true name gives those with that knowledge a great deal of power over the kitsune in question. Nogitsune are no different, and as such Dusk goes by a number of aliases.


    ^II Race: A nogitsune is a kitsune who does not worship or serve the Shinto goddess Inari. Nogitsune are often portrayed as evil, though that is not always the case; Duskwatch, for example, is not truly evil, he just isn't above harming others if it furthers his goals. Whereas many kitsune in the employ of Inari will not harm another creature (except in self-defense) if they can avoid it, nogitsune (and, by extension, Duskwatch) are not shy about using violence to get their way. Many kitsune will not harm a nogitsune unless they have to, preferring instead to show them the error of their ways and set them back on the path of righteousness and Inari's favor - because of this, Duskwatch will not go out of his way to hurt a kitsune. Consider it a gentleman's agreement of sorts; Duskwatch lives by the phrase "quid pro quo" - "this for that"


    ^III Age: It is said that a kitsune will gain a new tail every one-hundred years naturally, or can be rewarded another tail for pleasing the gods (namely, Inari). It is also possible to devour another kitsune's power and steal their tails, though this is a rare practice.
    In all actuality, Duskwatch's current body is almost three-hundred years old (hence three tails), but he is the reincarnation of another nogitsune who died with nine tails. OOC note: This character is the reincarnation of one of my old Void nogitsune characters, who was the most active and longest-running nogitsune alt I have ever played. I eventually stopped using him, but always enjoyed him as a character, hence his rebirth as Duskwatch. Duskwatch is aware that he has died once, but a lot of details about his previous life he is unaware of.


    ^IV Fickle: Dusk is very reactionary. He will treat others as they treat him, but will not hesitate to lash out if he feels he has been slighted in any way. A scorned kitsune is bad enough, antagonizing a nogitsune that has no qualms about hurting others is even worse. Don't do it if your character likes having all of their body parts in place.


    ^ V Illusions: Kitsune are well-known for their ability to create intricate illusions that are nigh indistinguishable from the real thing. This can range from something as simple as turning leaves into paper money all the way up to changing the appearance of an entire mountain. The more powerful the kitsune, the more believable the illusion and the bigger the affected area can be. The only mortals capable of seeing through a kitsune's illusions are those with powerful psychic abilities, or the highly-devout religious types. Even many supernatural creatures can be fooled by the trickery of a kitsune illusionist.


    ^ VI Kitsune-bi: All kitsune are capable of creating 'fox-fire', kitsune-bi. However, given the fact that fire is not one of the dominant elements Duskwatch can manipulate, his ability to use fox-fire is comparatively limited. In combat situations, he will only create fire if his opponent is resistant to both of his dominant elements, or if the enemy is especially weak against fire.
    Kitsune-bi is a trademark of the kitsune species as a whole, and what does Dusk usually do with it? He uses it to light his pipe.


    ^ VII Possession: Easily one of the most-feared abilities of ancient kitsune, possession allows Duskwatch to dematerialize into his pure spirit form and take control of another creature's body. Possessed individuals will lose all memory of anything that transpired while they were possessed, and may exhibit unusual behavior.

    List of current desires, IC or otherwise:

    - Kitsune-mochi or tsukimono-suji: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witchcraft#Japan In short, someone that wants him as a familiar. Be aware of the inherent dangers of attempting to control a fickle nogitsune. Using force is not advisable given his wide range of abilities unless your character is well-versed in kitsune lore, especially as it pertains to nogitsune, and experienced in sealing spiritual/magical powers (to ensure Dusk can't use them against him/her). Of course, someone he joins willingly will have a lot less trouble handling him and he will be much more open to doing things for them.

    - Perhaps someone that knew him in his previous incarnation and recognizes his spiritual aura?

    - Other kitsune or nogitsune: While Dusk is solitary by nature, having friends to turn to is never a bad thing (OOC note: I'm particularly interested in finding people who actually know a thing or two about kitsune/nogitsune beyond just "lol that hot Ahri chick from League is a kitsune so I'm gonna play one too!" - which, just fyi, Ahri's a Korean kumiho, not a kitsune.)

    - Got a long-lost family member that mysteriously disappeared one day and now reappears? Maybe he's possessed! Got a friend or loved one who's been acting... a bit strange lately? Maybe he's possessed! Know someone close to you that you know died yet somehow inexplicably is now standing before you? Maybe he's possessed! ... Or maybe Dusk is just trying to get a reaction and is pretending to be them. Either way! Duskwatch is a powerful spirit-critter. There's a billion different things that we can turn into a plot.

    Inari: The Rice Goddess herself. The mother of all kitsune. I love her as any child ought to, even though we don't see eye-to-eye. In her absence I have become my own person, and I am not about to suddenly drop everything and change my ways just because she shows up out of the blue to profess her motherly love for me. I do not hate her, but I have no desire to walk the path she has set before me again.

    Phiona: Friend. It's been so long since I had a friend, I'd forgotten what it's like. But this vixen has taught me the value of having someone to turn to all over again. I don't even care that she's a kitsune whereas I'm a nogitsune - I am proud to call her 'friend.' She was there for me when I needed her the most, in my time of weakness and doubt. And for that I can never fully repay her.
